This is a 6 ECTS (180 h) course targeted at master-level Computer Science and Mathematics students.
We will introduce knot theory both from a theoretical as well as algorithmic point of view. The maths is necessary to understand why knot invariants work, and the choice of topics covered is highly motivated by algorithmic applications.
Mostly, you should be will to work a little harder when things get tough. Not all concepts are equally complicated, but some can be quite challenging. A matured mathematical mindset will go a long way. Other than that, I will assume some working understanding of topolog.
There will be oral exams at the end of the semester.
The lectures will not adhere to any book. Instead, lecture notes made specifically for the course will be made available. Other than that, there are tons of knot theory books out there, discussing different topics differently. Pick one up and find out if it suits you!
